1. What is a sling? A piece of fabric that goes over one shoulder and around the opposite hip/waist. Adjustable by use of 2 sling rings.
2. What is an Asian Baby Carrier (ABC)? The simplest form of two shoulder carriers is essentially a square of fabric with straps at each corner. Two straps tie around the wearer’s waist. The other two straps go over the wearer’s shoulders (they may or may not cross over) then attach to the carrier or tie to themselves. The Chinese MeiTai is an example. All Asian-style carriers are unstructured soft carriers.
3. Is it safe? Many cultures around the world have used babywearing in one form or another for thousands of years. You can use a simple piece of cloth or a more sophisticated carrier. However, the most important tool to use is common sense. Your child is not “strapped in”. You are responsible for his or her safety. Only practice babywearing with a co-operative child!
4. Will my baby become “spoiled” and dependent? A baby who feels secure and certain that his needs will be met will be more independent. Anecdotal evidence shows that sling babies grow independent very quickly. They will ask to be put down where other, more insecure children ask to be picked up.
5. Is it comfortable for the baby? “That can’t be comfortable. If you were ’scrunched up’ like that, you would be uncomfortable.” But you aren’t shaped like a baby. Your baby has spent nine months ’scrunched up’ and finds this position comforting. Besides, babies tend not to be too shy about letting their parents know when they’re uncomfortable.
6. How do I get the right size? The sling and Asian baby carrier are large enough for people size 4 to 20. Smaller and larger sizes are available upon request.
7. How do I care for the sling? Machine wash cool delicate, no chlorine bleach, tumble dry low, cool iron.
